OUR APPROACH

Why these alloys are hard, and how we handle them

Nickel superalloys and titanium work-harden, conduct heat poorly and wear cutting tools quickly. Push too hard and you get tool failure, heat damage and scrapped parts; cut too lightly and you rub the surface and harden it further.

We plan every job around the material: rigid workholding, tooling chosen for the alloy, steady chip loads and coolant strategies tuned to each material. Then we verify the result on our CMM.

With exotic alloy stock often costing many times more than aluminum or steel, getting it right the first time protects your material, your budget and your schedule.

FAQ

Exotic alloy machining: common questions

Exotic alloys are high-performance metals used where standard steels and aluminum fall short: nickel superalloys such as Inconel, Hastelloy, Haynes alloys and A-286; nickel-copper Monel; titanium; and controlled-expansion alloys such as Invar and Kovar. They are specified for extreme heat, corrosion, weight savings or dimensional stability.

They work-harden quickly, keep their strength at the high temperatures created at the cutting edge, conduct heat poorly and contain hard particles that wear tools. These traits demand rigid setups, sharp tooling, controlled cutting parameters and experienced programming.

It depends on the environment. Inconel 718 is a common choice for high strength at elevated temperature, Inconel 625 for corrosion resistance and weldability, Monel for corrosive fluids and oxygen service, titanium for strength-to-weight, and Invar or Kovar where thermal expansion must be controlled.
