MACHINING INCONEL

Why Inconel is difficult, and how we approach it

Inconel work-hardens rapidly, concentrates heat at the cutting edge and contains hard particles that wear tools quickly. Light, rubbing cuts harden the surface for the next pass; uncontrolled aggressive cuts damage tools and parts.

Our approach starts in programming: toolpaths that keep a consistent chip load and avoid dwelling, rigid workholding to prevent chatter and distortion on thin walls, tooling selected for nickel alloys, and coolant delivered where it matters.

Critical features are verified on our CMM, and every part ships with the traceability and documentation aerospace and space programs require.

FAQ

Inconel machining: common questions

Yes. Inconel work-hardens quickly, retains strength at cutting temperatures and contains hard carbides that wear tooling. Successful machining relies on rigid setups, sharp tooling suited to nickel alloys, consistent chip loads and effective coolant, which is how we approach every Inconel job.

Inconel 718 is precipitation-hardenable, which gives it very high strength at elevated temperatures; it is widely used for rotating and structural hot-section parts. Inconel 625 is solid-solution strengthened and is prized for corrosion and oxidation resistance and weldability; it is common in ducting, manifolds and parts exposed to harsh fluids.

Rocket engine hardware faces extreme temperatures, high pressures and aggressive propellants. Inconel alloys keep their strength at high temperatures and resist oxidation and corrosion, making them a standard choice for combustion, injector, manifold and turbomachinery components.

Yes. We maintain full material traceability and supply material certifications and inspection documentation under our AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015 quality system.

A drawing and/or 3D model, the alloy and material specification (for example AMS 5662 or AMS 5663 for Inconel 718, or AMS 5666 for Inconel 625), quantities, and any finish, inspection or documentation requirements. For ITAR-controlled data, contact us first so we can arrange a secure transfer.
